Home Land
Luisa Valderrama
Living Room
For the project Living Room, Luisa Valderrama reused furniture from the street, arranged a living room, and covered it in soil by compressing the soil on the furniture. The soil’s link to its original setting addresses “land” as a concept of home and belonging. The artist notes, “as an immigrant, I feel deeply connected to the land I was born in. The installation of this work generates a light smell, which is closely linked for me with memory. The scent of this wet soil evokes home.” This installation stimulates a consciousness of the dual threats of human extinction and environmental damage. It is at once dystopian and comforting. In her practice, Valderrama is interested in reusing discarded objects to generate less waste. Within Living Room, everything is neatly organized and carefully made, with a ‘home sweet home’ feeling, addressing earth as the home we need to take care of.
