The Imminent Arrival
Joo Yeon Woo
What’s My Name?
What’s My Name? is comprised of fourteen photographs of the binders that Korean immigrant gyopo families use to store documents pertaining to visa and green card applications. Each folder represents one family. Gyopo is a Korean word that means emigrants from Korea and their descendants; it may be translated to ‘Korean diaspora’. Among other terms that refer to ethnic Koreans who live overseas, gyopo connotes a loss or weakening of the link between individuals and their home country. Joo Yeon Woo’s photographs present reflections on how immigrants respond to hybridized identity, discontinuity of place, and their sense of otherness.
