The Performance of Labor, Class, Race and Gender

The Performance of Labor, Class, Race and Gender weaves together narratives and creates spaces for underserved communities by providing a platform for migrant laborers to discuss issues that affect them in their own voice – a voice that often goes unheard in society. The artist interviewed migrant laborers (mostly men) who work in construction trades and wait for employment outside Home Depot. The audio interviews center around the reasons one migrates, ideas of the “American Dream,” stories about personal discrimination, and interpretations of the word “immigrant.” In the hierarchy of fine arts, women’s work, especially in textile craft, is not valued or appreciated. In the same way, labor contributed by immigrants and their contributions to a functioning society are unappreciated, which leads to their exploitation, displacement, abuse, and erasure.
