I.V. - I.D.

I.V.-I.D. consists of symbolically constructed intravenous infusion (I.V.) pieces made of clay. Each I.V. sculpture has an umbilical cord and contains personal identification documents and objects from the artist’s life, such as passports, national cards, earth, and texts. The I.V.-I.D. series evokes themes of nationality, violence, and healing. An I.V. intervenes in the body to rescue and heal. Similarly, societal and political identities are interjected into the individual through identification documents. While national identification documents are necessary to prove one’s identity, belonging, ownership, and protection, they also determine who is and is not welcome in the imagined collective of a nation. People with national identification documents may internalize the violence of nationalism, while those who are stateless – without identification documents – are often treated as undeserving of human rights. These identity markers are challenged when one views the world as a shared place for all.
