Akauke? Unknown!
Akauke? Unknown! is part of “The Republic of Unknown Territory,” a multimedia installation and performance project that interrogates notions of border control and immigration. Reproducing the colonial system of subjecting viewers to a rigorous visa application process for admittance into the Republic, Akauke? Unknown! externalizes migration through absence. Flooding the gallery are hundreds of disembodied shoes, floating headless ‘hijabs’, used clothes spilling out of suitcases. Also present are sculptures of body parts—these “life casts” of immigrants allude to the anonymity of countless migrants passing through countries to better their lives, while also referencing the many refugees who do not survive the journey. Accompanying this installation is the sound of migrant and refugee stories.
