Dividing Lines; The Midpoint.

Determining the cartographic midpoint of Europe is more challenging than it seems. There are multiple geographic definitions of the continent, and the midpoint shifts depending on whether you include Russia to the East, Turkey to the South, as well as some European countries’ remote islands. Divided Lines; The Midpoint presents one of those contested midpoints, focusing on one officially marked in 1775. If one also considers cultural, political and historical factors for this determination, one ends up with an even more blurred picture. The continent is in fact dotted with many monuments marking the ‘real’ center of Europe and no fewer than eight different nations have claimed to own the exact geometric midpoint. Going deeper, attempting to define Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe becomes harder still.
