Nina Ghanbarzadeh (Afkhamian)

This is written in Farsi

Nina Ghanbarzadeh lives between American and Persian cultures and finds herself translating constantly. Her meticulous diptych drawings juxtapose the opposite directions in which the English and Farsi languages are written, challenging viewers’ perspective and interpretation. In both works, truth is tested. From a distance, viewers initially perceive two sentences in English. Upon closer examination, they discover that the English words displayed are in fact composed of Farsi text, bearing the same meaning and written from right to left. The “facts” are written in Farsi and form the “truth” in English. Or could it be the other way around? Ghanbarzadeh evokes the power of language as not only a carrier of meaning and information, but also a powerful tool to shift people’s minds and opinions.
