Strange Waters
Greece today has become an ark for people from the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe—a citadel and a symbol of hope for increasing numbers of refugees and migrants fleeing war, poverty, religious or gender prosecution, or simply searching for a better life for themselves and their families. Marina Leybishkis’s Strange Waters took place in different locations of Greece but has roots in a well-known place called Lesvos. The work includes a series of video installations in which the artist asked different people from refugee camps to share one song – in their own language – that reminds them of their family and the home they left behind. Leybishkis strived to avoid the use of colonial language (English/mass media American) in order to claim her own place, space, and language so as to map her own territory.
