A Letter from an Alien Relative

A Letter from an Alien Relative is part of an observational poetic narrative video series. Biglow immigrated to the United States in 2017, and here expresses her outsider’s point of view. In this work, with a slight touch of humor, she tries to bring attention to the formal vocabulary that the USCIS uses to refer to immigrants. She explores the linguistic complexity of the words that the Immigration Bureau employs: the term “aliens” refers to foreigners who seek immigration, and “naturalization” is used to refer to the process of becoming an American citizen.
